今年71歲的大隅良典現任綜合研究大學院大學名譽教授、基礎生物學研究所名譽教授、東京工業大學前沿研究機構特聘教授，他在東京大學取得學士、博士學位後，遠渡美國進行研究，在洛克菲勒大學（Rockefeller University）擔任博士後研究員，之後返回日本任教。
